Humane Slaughter
Reducing suffering in meat production
The single activity in Kenya that raises the most welfare concerns is probably the production, transport and slaughter of animals for meat. Kenya is a nation of meat-lovers, and other animal products, such as hides and skins, are very important for the economy. Regardless of how we feel about the consumption of meat, it is upon us to engage with the industry to ensure that the welfare problems are as limited as possible.
With our mandate recognised in the law, the KSPCA monitors more than 100 slaughterhouses in Kenya every year, including inspection, monitoring and law enforcement, training and supply of humane slaughter equipment.
The KSPCA extends this training to county officers and others who are also responsible for enforcing transport and slaughter regulations.
Shelter, welfare investigations and emergency response
At any given time, the KSPCA has up to 400 open cases – reports of possible abuse and requests for emergency assistance from the public. These range from the consequences of road traffic accidents, animals abandoned in vacant properties, animals caught in traps or fallen into pit latrines, animals sick or injured, through to serious criminal allegations of abuse and organised criminal activity. We respond to emergency calls for assistance and, working with law enforcement authorities, we investigate and support the prosecution of criminal acts as appropriate.
With 3 animal shelters, 5 branches and a dedicated foster network across Kenya, the KSPCA provides safe haven to as many as a thousand animals a night. We provide medical assistance and high quality care in order to rehabilitate and rehome as many animals as possible.
