Welfare of Working Animals
Improving the lives of donkeys, horses and dogs
Hundreds of thousands of people rely on animals to make their livings across Kenya. Dogs are bred for profit or work for security companies; donkeys carry heavy loads; horses earn money in the leisure industry. Many users of working animals care about them and do their best, but there are also extreme examples of organised criminal exploitation, suffering and abuse.
The “Furaha ya Farasi” Horse Welfare Programme is the first of its kind in Kenya, aiming to address the urgent problem of horse welfare. We work to improve the conditions of working donkeys and protect them from illegal slaughter. We are working to improve conditions for dogs in the security industry and to end abusive intensive breeding.
